Planting Season: Why Spring Is the Best Time to Plant a Hedge

Why Spring Is the Best Time to Plant a Hedge

If you have been thinking about screening off a fence line or a nosy neighbour, spring is the season to act. Here is why the timing matters and how to make the most of it.

Warm soil, not hot air

Hedging plants root fastest when the soil is warm but the air is not yet scorching. Spring in South East Queensland delivers exactly that. Plants put on root growth before the first real heat of summer, which means they are far better equipped to handle January when it arrives.

A full growing season ahead

Advanced Lilly Pilly Resilience blocks the sightline from day one because we plant it at 1.2m to 2.5m depending on the size you choose. Planting in spring then gives it months of active growth to knit together into a single wall, typically putting on 30 to 60cm across the season once established.

Set it up right

Prepare the bed before your plants arrive: clear weeds, loosen compacted soil and work through some quality compost. Space plants at one per metre plus one to close the run, water each one in deeply, and mulch to 75mm. That is the whole recipe.
