Best Pool Privacy Plants for Queensland Backyards
Pool privacy is the request we hear most often, and it comes with rules the rest of the yard does not have: leaf litter ends up in the skimmer, roots live next to expensive shells and pipes, and everything you plant near a pool fence has climbing-zone rules to respect.
What matters poolside
- Low litter: evergreen, fine-leafed and tidy beats anything deciduous or flower-heavy.
- Polite roots: no vigorous surface rooters near shells, pipes and pavers.
- Salt and splash tolerance: chlorinated and saltwater splash both burn soft foliage.
- Fence compliance: QLD pool rules require a 900mm non-climbable zone around the barrier. Plants must not create a climbing aid over the fence.
Our poolside pick: Lilly Pilly Resilience
No surprise, but the reasons are specific to pools. Resilience is evergreen with glossy leaves that drop minimally and sweep easily. Its root system is fibrous and non-aggressive, safe at sensible distances from shells and plumbing. It clips into a tight formal wall that reads as resort rather than jungle, and it tolerates splash zones well.
Placement rules we install by
- Plant the hedge line outside the pool barrier where possible, screening the fence rather than crowding it.
- Keep mature hedge faces clear of the 900mm non-climbable zone. We check this at quote time.
- Allow 1m minimum from the pool shell edge, more for large stock.
- Think about the view from the water: screening the neighbour's second-storey windows usually needs 2m-plus stock, which is exactly what our Ultimate size is for.
What we steer people away from
Bamboo drops constant leaf litter into skimmers and running varieties are a liability near pipework. Ficus varieties have roots that hunt moisture, which is precisely what a pool is. Golden cane palms shed into the pool forever and thin at the base right where you want screening.
